Kite Safari Around Kappalady & Kalpitiya: My Top 5 Picks

Now, I know you lot aren't just messing about in the shallows anymore. You've tasted the freedom of kitesurfing and/or wingfoiling and you're planning a trip abroad. You’ve got your eye on Sri Lanka. Smart move! Call me biased, but I’d say this island's got it all, from butter-flat lagoons to wildly adventurous downwinders.

At Kitekuda Kite Resort, we eat, sleep, breathe kiting and foiling, it’s at the heart of all that we do. Whether you're a freestyle fanatic, a foiling friend, or just love exploring new spots with the wind in your hair, we'll dial in the perfect adventure in and around Kappaldy and Kalpitiya. Right, let's dive into my top picks for an epic Sri Lanka kite safari:

1. Vella Island & Mini Vella: Flat Water Paradise

We'll whisk you away on our speedy RIB boat (or a traditional fishing boat for smaller groups) for a nice easy downwinder at one of the best flat-water kite spot Sri Lanka has to offer. Vella Island is a great option for those looking to do their first downwinder as the chop doesn’t get too big and we have the boat on hand for safety.

Insider tip: Fancy a warm-up? Downwind from Dream Spot to Vella for a taste of the ocean before hitting that glassy water.

2. Dream Spot: Freestyle Fiesta & Foiling Heaven

Choose your mode of transport - jeep or boat and make your way to the far-end of the beach where you will be greeted by flat water perfection. Ideal for honing your skills or just blasting around and practising those freestyle moves. For you foiling fanatics? Dream Spot's got the depth and space you need to really let loose, the ultimate playground for all.

3. Puttalam Lagoon: Island Hopping & Downwinder Delight

Ready for a proper adventure? The Puttalam Lagoon is a kitesurfer's dream. We'll island hop and navigate through a maze of islands, hitting up hidden gems. The water is shallow and the spots are close together allowing you to choose to stay put at the first spot or mix it up and downwind it to a few different spots. Our expert guides will lead the way, ensuring you catch the best wind and conditions.

4. Kappalady to Kalpitiya Downwinder: The Ultimate Coastal Cruise

This is the one for the adrenaline junkies. Starting right here at our doorstep in Kappalady, we'll ride the waves all the way to downwind to Donkey Point, Kalpitiya. You'll witness stunning scenery, feel the power of the ocean, and experience the true essence of kitesurfing and wingfoiling. Don't worry, our safety boat or an experienced guide will be alongside, so you can push your limits with confidence.

5. Donkey Point Wave Riding: Spice Things Up

Jump in the jeep and drive 30 minutes to the infamous Donkey Point for a taste of wave riding action to spice things up after those lagoon sessions. At Donkey Point you can expect uncrowded and forgiving waves ideal for beginners. I’d highly recommend this for those of you who wing foil or ride a directional board, plenty of uncrowded fun to be had by all out there.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the minimum amount of people needed for a kite safari? There's a minimum of 2 people for the safari. If you're a solo traveler we will do our best to find other guests that you can join!
  • What is the minimum experience level to join a kite safari? All safari's are guided with a safety boat and a kite assistant, meaning that if you get into trouble, help is always at hand. However to avoid constant boat pickup's we expect you to be confident riding upwind. If you're still learning, we suggest booking an instructor with your trip to get you riding upwind consistently in no time!
  • What should I bring along with me for kite safari? We include the transport, food and water, as well as having a first-aid box and kite pump on hand. All you need to remember is plenty of sunscreen, sun glasses, long sleeve shirt, your kite gear (if you not renting from our Duotone Pro Centre) and smiles :D
  • I found a cheaper boat, why should I go with you? Our RIB boat is the most comfortable boat on the coast equipped with board racks and kite hangers providing plenty of space for multiple sizes. Our shaded overhang provides a nice place to chill in between your sessions. We also provide the transport to and from the boat, lunch, snacks and water! So no hidden costs, just full service!
