One Day at Kitekuda – My Experience as a Volunteer

Hey, I’m Tania from Germany, and since January 2025, I’ve been volunteering at Kitekuda Kite Resort – and I absolutely love it!

I came to Sri Lanka to improve my kitesurfing skills (okay, let’s be honest – I didn’t have any before, haha) and to explore the local culture. What I didn’t expect, though, was how quickly I’d settle into the laid-back lifestyle at Kitekuda. After just a few days, I felt calmer and more relaxed than ever. So, let me take you through a typical day at Kitekuda Kite Resort so you can understand exactly what I mean.

Mornings at Kitekuda – Tranquility at Its Best

Every day here starts peacefully, allowing you to recharge your inner battery. I usually wake up to the sound of birds singing or the gentle waves from the Indian Ocean. After getting up, one of my favorite things about staying at Kitekuda is the semi-outdoor bathroom in my bungalow, where I take a refreshing shower under the open sky.

Afterwards, I head to the patio overlooking Kappalady Lagoon for a morning coffee and a delicious breakfast. The resort’s four dogs, Matchi, Foxy, Goaway, and Youtoo, are usually lounging nearby, and if I’m lucky, little Cheesecake, the baby goat, stops by for cuddles.

In the winter season, the mornings are calm with the wind building around lunch time. Perfect conditions for exploring the lagoon by stand-up paddleboard (SUP) or kayak. Sometimes, I take the kayak with three of the dogs and paddle to the beach, where we run along the shore, swim, and relax. It’s an amazing way to start the day and take in the beauty of Sri Lanka’s coastline.

Afternoons – When the Wind Kicks In

Around noon, it’s time for lunch, and honestly, the food here is out of this world! Sri Lankan cuisine is full of flavor, and I’ve fallen in love with every meal I’ve had so far.

After lunch, the wind starts picking up – and that’s when the real adventure begins! The best thing about Kitekuda is that you can launch your kite right in front of your room. As a beginner, I started with kitesurfing lessons from an IKO-certified instructor at the Duotone Pro Center, which is part of Kitekuda Kite Resort. Thanks to the waist-deep, flat water and steady winds, I felt confident on the kite after just a few sessions.

Now, I ride independently, and it’s an incredible feeling! Plus, the beach assistants are always nearby, ready to help if needed. The Duotone equipment here is top-notch, and I’m seriously considering taking a couple of kites back home to Germany. For experienced kiters, the uncrowded lagoon and all-day riding until sunset make this spot an absolute dream.

Evenings – Unwinding in Paradise

After an adrenaline-filled kitesurfing session, I usually chill by the pool, go for a quick swim, or read a book in the sun. As the golden hour sets in, I relax in a hammock by the lagoon and watch some of the most stunning sunsets I’ve ever seen.

Dinner at Kitekuda starts at 7 p.m., and it’s always a social affair. Guests from all over the world gather around the table, sharing stories and enjoying amazing home-cooked meals. After dessert, we often play guitar, sing songs, play games, or just chat under the stars.

I hope I could give you a little glimpse into a typical day at Kitekuda Kite Resort. If you’re looking for the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, this is the place to be. Whether you’re a beginner looking to learn kitesurfing or an experienced rider searching for an uncrowded paradise, you’ll feel at home here.

So, if this sounds like your kind of experience, maybe we’ll meet here in the future!
